Food & Nutrition

Everyone needs food! In addition to the great grocery stores, farmers markets, charitable food pantries/banks, and restaurants in Douglas County, seniors have special options for every need.

Senior Meals

Operated by us—the Senior Resource Center—Senior Meals improves the lives of Douglas County residents 60 and older by delivering well-balanced, heart-healthy, satisfying meals directly to the homes of seniors. Senior Meals serves an average of 140 noontime meals every day, Monday through Friday, to qualified homebound clients in Baldwin City, Eudora, Lecompton, and Lawrence.

To qualify for home delivered meals, the customer must be homebound and unable to attend a CHAMPSS site (see information about CHAMPSS below). A staff member visits the homes of persons requesting home delivery to certify their eligibility and to provide assistance in obtaining other home-based services which might be useful. There is no charge for this assessment. To find out more, call Johnetta at (785) 727-7881 or contact us using our online form.

Fees for Senior Meals
While there is no charge for the meals, donations are expected according to clients’ abilities to help.

CHAMPSS (Choosing Healthy Appetizing Meal Plan Solutions for Seniors)

The CHAMPSS meal program represents the future of senior care by its being located in places used by people of all ages and the general public. CHAMPSS allows seniors age 60 and older to choose from different entrees and eat any meal spontaneously at their convenience seven days a week at six CHAMPSS locations throughout Lawrence. CHAMPSS is managed by the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging (JAAA). There is a suggested donation of $3.00 per meal, and participants must attend an orientation to enroll in the program. Click here to find out when the next orientation will be. Participants say they enjoy the flexibility offered through this program as well as the opportunity to be around people of all ages.
