Resources for Seniors

The Senior Resource Center for Douglas County is your go-to place for anything related to being a senior.

Whether you are a new senior looking for ways to design your retirement to fit your dreams, are suddenly in a crisis and need help navigating a complicated list of resources, or are a family member wondering what options are available, SRC is your first place to go.

If we don’t provide what you want, if it exists we can help you find it.

SRC itself provides:

  • Information and resources on important topics such as Medicare, senior living options, in-home care, emergency utility and rent assistance, and more.
  • Transportation for seniors to the doctor, the grocery store, or wherever in Douglas County you want to go
  • Information and resources on various area support groups, including our own Caregiver Support Group.
  • Community groups and activities, such as the Intergenerational Choir, the New Horizons Band, Serenity Pause, and Tuesday Painters.
  • Game Room with space for groups, such as Scrabble Club, billiards, darts, and other board games, as well as access to cable tv and computer station.
  • Partnerships with community programs including AARP Tax-Aide, Helping Hammer, Just Food, Kansas Legal Aid, Safe Winter Walkways, and more.
  • Lifelong learning with classes sponsored by the Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence Parks and Recreation, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
  • Ongoing health presentations and screenings from our partner LMH Health.

Medicare & Other Health Insurance

The Senior Health Insurance Counseling of Kansas (SHICK) educates the public and assists consumers on topics related to Medicare and health insurance so they can make informed decisions. SHICK is a free, unbiased, and confidential program that uses trained, community counselors to answer people’s questions about Medicare and other insurance issues.

You can meet with a SHICK Counselor at the Senior Resource Center for Douglas County. We have trained staff and volunteers who are available to meet with you, review your options, and provide the information you need to make an informed decision about your Medicare coverage.

Transportation

Senior Wheels of SRC provides Douglas County seniors door-to-door transportation for medical, nutritional, and personal purposes. Transportation for individuals who use a wheelchair lift or a ramp is available; just let us know your preference when scheduling your ride.
